iExplore Endangered Species Learning Story

Learner: Neha, Karleil & Justin             Learning Coach: DWilkes      Date: Term 3-4
Learning Area: iExplore (Science and Literacy)
Learning Observed
During term 3 and part of term 4, Neha, Justin and Karleil decided to collaborate together on their iExplore learning adventure.  They were inspired by their iExperience learning on animals, food webs, habitats and threats so they decide they were curious about endangered species.  During our conferences they refined their curiosity to endangered species of New Zealand and each of the learners selected 3 to find more out about and write a fact file for.  When they went to the zoo they learned more about why animals are endangered in New Zealand and around the world- what poaching meant and how pollution and habitat destruction are often the causes.  They wanted to create an awareness of how the learners at OrmPS could help endangered species in New Zealand.  They discussed how to do this through conferences and open to learning conversations with their learning coaches and each other.  They grew their capabilities at listening, negotiating and researching while they made lots of connections to their experiences and prior knowledge.  They all enjoyd the ‘animal onesie’ day at the end of the term too!

A bright light shined through the windows of Deny's and through the doors,
as we walked in and heard nice soft music, that echoed through my ears as if you walked into
a room that is quiet and all you can hear is the cars stuck in traffic.

We ordered a seat for five, two children, two teen and one adult we sat down
and the seats were as hard as a rock the the food was great but the best thing was the

Karleil's 3D Printing Learning Story

Learner: Karleil    Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 21.7.15
Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing
Learning Observed
Karleil chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose?
The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Karleil decided to make a waterproof schoolbag.
Karleil had to use the website TinkerCad to design his new and improved schoolbag. He had to use the pre-existing shapes to form the 3D model which was then printed out by our LH1 3D printer.
After analysing his printed model, Karleil was able to write a description about who would use it, why he designed it and what its features were. Karleil also spent some time reflecting on improvements and redesigning it on TinkerCad to show these changes.
Evidence of learning

IMG_0705.JPG
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Karleil demonstrated curiosity by engaging with the entire technology process of designing, making, redesigning and evaluating. He was connected as he was able to show his learning in three different mediums (paper, digital and printed model). Karleil was also capable by presenting his learning to other people in the 3D printing group, as well as learners who participated in other Technology groups.
Next Learning Steps
  • Complete the second design on TinkerCad and print if time allows.
  • Use the 3D printer as a component of an iExplore.
  • Teach another learner how to use TinkerCad.

Karleil's Speech Learning Story

Learner:   Karleil                                                                       Learning Coach: DWilkes
Learning Area:  Literacy                                                                              Date: Aug 2015
Learning Observed
This term all Year 5-6 learners in LH1 wrote a speech on a topic of their choosing.  Oral language is an important skill and Krleil refined his knowledge of some language features to enhance both the speaking and writing of his oral presentation.  His speech about ‘Why we shouldn’t give up’ demonstrated his growing ability to be persuasive both through the content and delivery. Karleil learned about emotive language features such as the use of adjectives; persuasive features such as rhetorical questions, repetition, quotations, statistics, contrasts and lists of three; and varied sentence structures like statements, questions, exclamations and commands.  He learned about the structure of a speech including introductions, endings, sequencing words and how to make his point clear. Karleil also explored how to creatively add additional details to make the argument stronger. This was based around the ‘hamburger method’ of speech writing.  It was wonderful to see Karleil do his persuasive speech on a topic that he is passionate about.  He did his speech without cue cards.
Evidence of learning
Some of the tools used to structure and develop the speech
Speech-Hamburger.pngScreen Shot 2015-07-26 at 11.19.04 pm.png
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Karleil cultivated the curiosity of others with his speech about not giving up- he clearly believes it! He prompted everyone to wonder about their own perseverance.  He connected with the audience using emotive language and quotes - in our hapu group. He collaborated with other learners while practicing his speech and responded to feedback and in discussing, writing and providing feedback and feed forward to the other learners when they presented their speech or poem.  His public speaking capability has grown as a result of this experience.
Next Learning Steps
  • write a reflective blog post about your speech
  • embed the oral rubric into your learning pathway
  • practice reading aloud daily
  • practice your speech in front of a mirror
  • write what you think your next steps are in the comment section
  • future speeches will be strengthened by refining the facts/research that has been done to validate what your opinion is

speech

my speech

A The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

people give up, in life ,in work and school but I think everyone should have equal chance at life.
Yes, you may not be rich, you may not even be in a house but it is all about learning it is hard but if you are living on the side of the road look at yourself you are unclean and the only way that can fix it is hard work and school.

I play rugby and I had a lead injury but I am still going
once I was punch in the face more than five times in one day
and kicked in the stomach by my own sister but and here I am speaking to you right now forget the past live the future.

when most people have a chance to change their future they just pick it up and just throw it away, like it was nothing, well I tell you now if you keep on doing that your future is destroyed so once you have a chance to change your future change it make the most of your life whether it is small or big grow your Ideas and you will become more the you Imagine
and this goes to the children work hard make you parents proud don’t end up homeless or poor don’t be like the people that have already destroyed their future remember don’t give up you will always have people there to support you, your wife your parents and your family,
It always seems impossible until it's done.

NYLD iMovie Learning Story - August 2015

Learners:  Jessica, Nisita & Karleil                                             Learning Coach: D Wilkes
Learning Area: KCs and Literacy                                                Date: Aug 5
Learning Observed
Jessica, Karleil and Nisita collaborated together to provide a wonderful and inspirational component to the ‘Leadership Experience’ as a long awaited follow up to the NYLD that all the Year 6s attended in Term 2.  The learners co-constructed a presentation and talk about the highlights from the NYLD day (which can be found in the Leadership Experience presentation).  They sparked the curiosity of the crowd with the strong message of leadership.  The learners loved watching the video and most walked away thinking about the leaders who have influenced them.  Practicing their public speaking, writing, presenting and leading was what they did while the audience enjoyed their entertaining iMovie.
Evidence of learning
Sharing the iMovie of NYLD highlights they co-constructed

Sharing what leadership means to them
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
While Jessica, Nisita and Karleil collaborated they made direct and indirect connections to their experience at NYLD and their knowledge of leaders/leadership.  They related to others, managed themselves responsibly and participated enthusiastically on the day.  They were collaborative and responded to changes with resilience.  The preparation for the presentation was great and their short blurbs were a nice finishing touch.
Next Learning Steps
  • add more pictures and sub-titles to the iMovie to make it longer
  • practice your speaking parts more before presenting so we can all hear you and slow down your pace as well
  • write a blog post about the afternoon including your reflections
  • share your learning with family at home

Literature Circle Learning Story - Verbs group

Learner:   Karleil (Verbs)                                                                      Date: June 2015
Learning Area: Literacy                                         Learning Coach: Diana Wilkes
Learning Observed
All learners require literacy skills in order to be contributors and active participants in society. We believe that learners must study, use and enjoy language and literature when communicated orally, visually or in writing.  We have been working really hard this term to learn how to have a ‘Book Club’ in literacy iDevelop.  We began by learning about how to select and why to select a ‘Best Fit’ book- please ask Karleil what book he is reading and how he knows it is a best fit on a regular basis.  He learned all about the 5 finger strategy to help him choose.  The Verbs group was also introduced to an online book resource called http://booktrackclassroom.com to which he has an account. In our Literature Circle each learner has a different role each week:  Summariser, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard, Discussion Director, Connector, Artful Artist or Researcher which ensures that the book club runs smoothly.  Karleil was a great word Wizard and has improved the amount of content he can contribute.  He is developing confidence at sharing in our meetings and has been well prepared for some of our meetings.  He participates and contributes in the discussions with prompting.
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Karleil is showing Connectedness by relating his work to the text we are reading. He is relating to others well by remaining respectful while others speak and he is Collaborative when he is participating in the discussion.  He is also developing his Capability in reading conversation and oral language.
Next Learning Steps
  • Always have a Best Fit book at school everyday and read every night at home, out loud when possible
  • Visit booktrackclassroom.com often to read new books
  • Prepare for the Literature Circle meetings in the collaborative google doc and act on the feedback immediately
  • Ask for help when unsure and manage time wisely
